How to use the compress pdf

Reduce a PDF's file size for email and upload limits. Basic re-saves the PDF more efficiently and keeps everything as it is. Medium and Strong turn each page into a compressed image, which shrinks scanned and photo-heavy PDFs dramatically, but the text can no longer be selected or searched. You see the new size before you download, and if a level doesn't make the file smaller, the tool tells you instead of giving you a bigger file.

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick Basic, Medium or Strong.
  3. Press Compress PDF and compare the sizes.
  4. Download the smaller PDF.

When to use it

  • Upload limits

Get a scanned document under a portal's 1 MB or 2 MB limit.

  • Email

Shrink attachments that are too big to send.

  • Storage

Keep archives of scanned paperwork smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Which level should I use?

Try Basic first for PDFs made from Word or other software. For scans and photo-heavy PDFs, Medium usually gives a big saving with readable pages; Strong is smallest.

Why can't I select text after Medium or Strong?

Those levels turn each page into an image to save space. Use Basic if you need the text to stay selectable and searchable.

Why didn't my PDF get smaller?

PDFs that are already compact, mostly text, can't be reduced much. The tool only offers a download when the result is smaller.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

No. Remove the password first.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It's compressed in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers.
